Frequently Asked Questions
About Safe Harbor Family
What is Safe Harbor Family?
Safe Harbor Family creates practical emergency and family-continuity resources that help families organize important information before an unexpected event makes that information difficult to find. The goal is simple: give your loved ones a clear place to begin when you are unavailable to provide the answers yourself.
What is the Safe Harbor Family Emergency Preparation Kit?
The Safe Harbor Family Emergency Preparation Kit is a focused, practical starting point for organizing the information your household may need during a hospitalization, emergency, evacuation, loss, or other situation in which the person who normally manages family information cannot do so. It includes guided worksheets, an emergency-access reference, and action plans for the first critical hours and days.
What is The Safe Harbor Family Master System?
The Safe Harbor Family Master System is a broader, seven-volume emergency and continuity system designed to help a household organize important information, responsibilities, instructions, and decisions in one structured reference. It is intended to be printed, completed, organized in a binder, and stored where the right people can find it when needed.
What is the difference between the Emergency Preparation Kit and the Master System?
The Emergency Preparation Kit focuses on the essentials and gives families a manageable place to start. The Master System goes much further, with a more comprehensive structure for ongoing family responsibilities, financial and household information, medical information, important documents, emergency playbooks, final wishes, and other continuity needs. The Kit is the starter system; the Master System is the complete system.
Which Safe Harbor Family product should I start with?
If you want a focused, affordable way to organize the most important information first, start with the Emergency Preparation Kit. If you already know you want a more complete family emergency and continuity system, the Master System is designed for that broader purpose. There is no wrong place to begin. The important part is to start.
Couldn’t I just create my own family emergency binder without buying one?
Yes. You can absolutely create your own family emergency binder from scratch. Safe Harbor Family isn’t based on the idea that you can’t.
The value of our products is that you don’t have to start with a blank page and figure out for yourself what should be included, how the information should be organized, or what important details you may be overlooking. The Emergency Preparation Kit gives you a practical starting framework, while the Master System goes much further with guided sections, emergency planning, household and financial continuity, important-document organization, password strategy, handoff planning, and other areas a family may need during an unexpected event.
If you have the time and confidence to build your own system, you certainly can. Safe Harbor Family is for people who would rather begin with a structured framework and adapt it to their own household.
Who are these products designed for?
They are designed for individuals, couples, parents, caregivers, and households that want important family information to be easier for a trusted person to find and use during an emergency or unexpected event. You do not need special training or prior emergency-planning experience.
Do I need to be a 'prepper' to use Safe Harbor Family products?
No. Safe Harbor Family is not built around a prepper lifestyle. These products are for ordinary families who want to be better organized for the kinds of unexpected events that can happen to anyone.
Are these products only for natural disasters?
No. Natural disasters are only one type of situation these products can help families prepare for. They are also useful for hospitalization, serious illness or injury, evacuation, sudden loss, temporary incapacity, extended absence, and other events that can leave family members needing information or instructions quickly.
What is a family emergency binder?
A family emergency binder is an organized collection of the information, documents, instructions, and contacts your household may need if an emergency or unexpected event leaves the person who normally manages that information unavailable. It can include emergency contacts, medical information, insurance details, financial and household information, locations of important documents, and instructions that help a trusted person know what to do next.
Is a family emergency binder the same as a “just-in-case binder” or “life binder”?
The terms are often used for similar types of family organization systems, but there is no single standard definition. A “just-in-case binder” or “life binder” may contain household, financial, medical, or end-of-life information. Safe Harbor Family uses the broader idea of family continuity: organizing the information and instructions your loved ones may need during hospitalization, injury, evacuation, temporary incapacity, sudden loss, or other unexpected events.
Is Safe Harbor Family an estate-planning or legal service?
No. Safe Harbor Family provides educational and organizational resources that help families organize important information, documents, instructions, and emergency-planning materials. Our products are not legal, financial, medical, insurance, tax, estate-planning, cybersecurity, or other professional advice. Legal documents such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and advance directives should be prepared or reviewed with the appropriate qualified professional.
Using the System
What kinds of emergencies does the system help families prepare for?
The system is designed around family continuity rather than one specific type of disaster. It can help organize information that may be needed during hospitalization, serious illness or injury, evacuation, loss of a family member, temporary incapacity, household disruption, and other emergencies or unexpected events. No planning system can anticipate every circumstance, but having accurate information organized and accessible can reduce avoidable confusion.
What information should I gather before I start?
You do not need to gather everything before you begin. Start with what you already know, then collect additional information as the worksheets call for it. Depending on the product, that may include emergency contacts, household information, medical details, regular bills, insurance information, financial and account information, locations of important documents, and instructions for accessing essential services or accounts.
Do I have to complete everything at once?
No. In fact, most families will find it easier to work through the system in stages. Complete the most important sections first, then return to the remaining pages as time allows. A partially completed system that contains accurate, useful information is more valuable than a perfect system that never gets started.
Where should I start if the Master System feels overwhelming?
Start with the Quick-Start material and Volume 1. The Master System is intentionally divided into separate volumes so you can work through it a section at a time. Focus first on the information your family would need most urgently, then build from there. You do not need to finish all seven volumes in one sitting.
How often should I review or update my information?
Review it periodically and whenever something important changes. Good times to update the system include a move, new job, new insurance policy, new bank or financial account, medication change, birth, marriage, divorce, death, major purchase, change in emergency contacts, or change in your legal or estate-planning documents.
Should every adult in the household know where the completed system is kept?
At least one trusted adult besides the person who created the system should know that it exists and where it is stored. In many households, that will be a spouse or partner. You may also choose a designated emergency contact or trusted family member. The system cannot help if the people who need it do not know where to find it.
Should I keep a printed copy, a digital copy, or both?
The products are designed primarily to be printed and used as a physical family reference. You should also retain the original PDF and a reasonable backup copy for your household. If you create digital copies containing completed personal information, store them securely. Completed pages may contain sensitive financial, medical, identification, or account information.
Where is the safest place to store my completed documents?
Choose a location that balances security with accessibility. A home safe, fire-resistant document box, or secure filing cabinet may be appropriate. Whatever location you choose, make sure at least one trusted person knows where the system is kept and can access it when necessary. Avoid leaving completed materials containing sensitive information in an unsecured location.
What should be included in a family emergency binder?
A useful family emergency binder should give a trusted person enough information to understand your household and handle the most important responsibilities if you cannot. Depending on your family's needs, that can include emergency contacts, medical information, insurance policies, financial accounts, recurring bills, household and property information, important-document locations, pet information, emergency plans, and instructions for accessing essential services or accounts. Start with the information your family would need most urgently and build from there.
What documents should I keep in a family emergency binder?
Rather than placing every original document in the binder, organize the information your family needs and record where important originals are stored. That may include information about identification documents, insurance policies, property records, financial accounts, tax records, estate-planning documents, medical information, and other records important to your household. Originals that require greater security can remain in a safe, fire-resistant document box, secure filing cabinet, or other appropriate location while the binder tells your trusted person where to find them.
Should I put passwords in my emergency binder?
Generally, no. Passwords should be protected separately rather than written directly into a family emergency binder containing other sensitive information. The Safe Harbor Family Emergency Preparation Kit and the Safe Harbor Family Master System use a password strategy that allows your family to know how to gain appropriate emergency access without placing passwords themselves in jeopardy. The binder can identify accounts and provide access instructions while the actual passwords remain protected through your chosen secure method.
Digital Files & Printing
Are the PDFs fillable on a computer?
Safe Harbor Family products are designed primarily to be printed and completed by hand. Some PDF software may allow you to add notes or type over a PDF, but that is not the intended workflow and compatibility with every PDF reader or device is not guaranteed.
Can I print the documents and fill them out by hand?
Yes. That is the intended use. The Emergency Preparation Kit and Master System are designed to be printed, completed by hand, and kept where your household can find them when needed.
Can I print only the pages I need?
Yes, although the best approach depends on the product. With the Emergency Preparation Kit, you can print and work with the pages that are most useful to your family. The Master System is designed as a complete binder, so we recommend building the full system, but you can print individual replacement or update pages whenever needed.
Can I reprint pages later if my information changes?
Yes. Your personal-use license allows you to print the copies reasonably needed to complete, update, replace, and maintain the system for your own household. Keep the original PDF so you can replace pages when information changes.
Ordering & Delivery
How will I receive my purchase?
Paid Safe Harbor Family products are delivered electronically. After a successful purchase, the PDF is sent to the email address used during checkout. No physical binder or printed product is shipped unless a product page specifically says otherwise.
How quickly will my product arrive after payment?
Delivery is automated and normally occurs shortly after the payment is successfully completed. Give the email a few minutes to arrive, and check your spam, junk, or promotions folder if you do not see it in your inbox.
What should I do if I don't receive the email containing my purchase?
First, check your spam, junk, and promotions folders and allow a few minutes for delivery. If it still has not arrived, email support@thesafeharborfamily.com. Include the email address used for the purchase and the receipt, invoice, transaction, or other purchase reference shown on your Stripe or Link receipt so we can locate the transaction.

Contact support@thesafeharborfamily.com and tell us what is happening. If the file is missing, damaged, unreadable, or you received the wrong product, include the email address used for the purchase and the purchase reference from your Stripe or Link receipt so we can verify the order and help resolve the problem.
Privacy, Payments & Support
Is my payment information stored by Safe Harbor Family?
Payment processing is handled through Stripe Managed Payments and Link. Safe Harbor Family does not need to receive or store your full payment-card details to deliver your product. Stripe and Link handle payment processing and transaction-related services under their own terms and privacy practices.
Does Safe Harbor Family store the personal information I enter into my downloaded documents?
No. Information you write into printed copies or save locally in your downloaded Safe Harbor Family documents stays under your control unless you separately choose to send that information to us. Because completed materials may contain sensitive information, you are responsible for deciding how they are stored, protected, and shared.
What is your refund policy for digital products?
Because Safe Harbor Family products are digital and delivered electronically, sales are generally considered final once the product has been delivered, except where a refund is required by applicable law or provided under Stripe Managed Payments policies. For billing errors, duplicate charges, disputes, or refund requests, transaction assistance may be available through Stripe or Link. For product-specific problems such as non-delivery, the wrong file, or an unreadable file, contact support@thesafeharborfamily.com so we can help.
How do I contact Safe Harbor Family if I need help with my purchase?
Email support@thesafeharborfamily.com. For a purchase-related issue, include the email address used at checkout and the receipt, invoice, transaction, or other purchase reference shown on your Stripe or Link receipt. That helps us locate the purchase and resolve the issue more quickly.
